Doomed

Mt Ruapehu

If you ever have the chance to go skiing, DO IT. It is so much fun, look how delighted I am...

ski_trip_ruapehu_new_zealand

DELIGHTED.

We were skiing at Whakapapa, on the northern side of Mount Ruapehu. This was my first time skiing but it won't be the last, I'm now hooked. It's going to become an expensive habit I think! I also want to try snowboarding, probably down in Queenstown, but I think I'm a ski bunny in my heart.

Oh did I mention Ruapehu is also Mt Doom from Lord Of The Rings. Skiing on Mt Doom… I mean come on.

And I even got to wear my fur hat, which is always a good time.

Wai-O-Tapu / Sacred Waters

[Rainbow Crater]

Wai-O-Tapu is New Zealand's most colourful geothermal area. The hot springs are coloured by the different mineral elements which are absorbed out of the rocks due to the intense heat underground from the magma. I of course was thinking this the entire time.

waiotapu_thermal_volcanic_springs_hot_new_zealand

There's no walking allowed, for obvious reasons. You will melt.

Excuse the Uggs, while the thermal springs are hot, New Zealand is COLD.

The Champagne Pool is 65 meters in diameter and 62 meters deep making it the largest spring in the district. Minerals in the water that give it all the different colours include gold, silver, mercury, sulphur, arsenic, thallium and antimony.

The surface of the Champagne Pool is about 74C and hot steam rolls across the water. Despite the bubbling water and boiling mud in other pools this was the only place you could really feel the heat.

This was definitely my favourite. You know I love neon and this pool was fluorescent! Thanks to colloidal sulphur and ferrous salts, the Devil's Bath changes from green to yellow depending on the reflected light and cloud cover. I'm so glad I saw it on a neon green day. It must have know there were Irish girls in town.

Ransom Vineyard

For my first visit to a vineyard, Ransom definitely set the bar pretty high! We went for lunch and shared this amazing platter and the view over the vineyard on a warm day was perfect. The entire time I kept saying 'I'm in a vineyard guys, like an actual vineyard!'

For some reason I could not get over how cool that was, maybe it was the wine. Oh the wine! So after once indulging in possible too much white I had lost my taste for it, but that has now been fully restored. This Pinot Gris has an intensely aromatic bouquet, with praline, pineapple and pear, all embedded in a honeyed melange… Can you tell I didn't write that? Well that is what the website tells me, but what I do know is this was the best white I've tried yet.

Ch-Ch-Ch-Changes

So my blog is taking a slight diversion for the foreseeable future. Vanilla Vault will temporarily be a travel focused blog now that I've left London and moved to the absolute other side of the world - New Zealand! Of course where possible I will still be keeping my closet a priority, but I don't know how styled you can be while walking on a glacier or relaxing in a hot pool, but I'll do my best.

Be ready for something new, I'm not ready for it, but hey it's going to be an adventure. Let's go!

I am in love with this jacket. So are you, I mean look at it, you can't resist. It is beautifully cut and the leather is so soft, if there is one thing Allsaints knows, it is how to make a quality leather jacket. It has also been pointed out to me that it matches my hair, convenient, and then we found a wall that matched as well. Perfect photo opportunity, so matchy.

With all the lovely British sunshine this jacket is honestly the only tan I will wear this summer…
