Deeper Underground

[Waitomo Caves]

waitomo ruakiri glow-worm cave new zealand

Waitomo Caves are the best known glowworm caves in probably the whole of New Zealand. I went there and did a 5 hour caving/climbing trip. We were climbing through Ruakuri Cave which began forming about 30 million years ago and has some of the best limestone features of all the caves in the area. We couldn't bring anything into the caves so the guides took all the photos and the cave was so humid they are a little blurry, apologies! Before they let you do this trip you have to take a fitness test which I thought was going to be like a treadmill or pull-ups or something. No, they basically ask you to crawl through a real narrow box tunnel, to see if you fit. Duh.

So these are the glow-worms I was so excited to see. Turns out they are little maggots and it's their poop that glows to attract prey… Oh lovely! They hang these threads down to catch prey, kinda like cobwebs, they looked much better in person, I swear.

We did see loads more than these few but there are no photos of them unfortunately!

Oh yes, I got to wear pink boots. Having tiny feet meant I got to wear the kids boots and of course I chose the pink ones. Who wouldn't?!

This is actually us above the underground river where another group we doing black water rafting. Most of the time we turned out out headlamps to let them go buy undisturbed, well mostly we would random do ghost impersonations just to creep them a little. oooooooohhhhhhhh…...

Back in Time

[Napier]

napier north island new zealand

Napier is a town on the east coast of North Island that was rebuilt in the early 1930s after a massive earthquake destroyed the town and forced the bay up 2 metres. Those running the town at the time commissioned all the buildings in the Art Deco style of the era and the lasting results mean stepping into this town is like stepping back in time. Every year they hold a 1930s festival with old cars, music and costumes. I loved it here even though it was pretty quiet and there wasn't much to do, it was nice just wandering the streets and checking out little cafes and tea shops.

It was a strange mix of modern and vintage, but still managed to blend.

The Cathedral

[Cathedral Cove]

I have no photos of Hot Water Beach as I was too busy lazing about in a hole in the sand spa with some American guys. You can forgive my distraction. Basically you head to the beach at low tide, dig a hole near the special spot where the boiling river flows beneath and boom, you've made you own hot tub! The water was so hot we had to bring buckets of cold water up from the sea just so the water was tolerable. It was a sad moment when the tide came in too far and cold water rushed into our sand pit/hot tub. Afterwards we hiked up to Cathedral Cove to check out the rock arches which were cool, and  very pretty, but the water was cold! And it probably took about 20 minutes to even get a photo of the archway with no one in it. Damn tourists.

Freezing My Franz Off

[Franz Josef]

The glacier trek was probably the best thing I have ever done. Mostly because of the helicopter. The glacier was pretty cool, don't get me wrong, but the helicopter that just made my life!

My most ridiculous today I'm wearing post ever - crampons. They don't sound nice at all, a combination of two words that are frankly awful, I don't think I need to spell it out for you.

Our guide was Sam, who was amazing. He'd worked in China, Nepal and all over New Zealand doing treks like this. Sam was a badass.

Dream Guy
We were given these as well for a tasty little geography lesson...

Did you also know a Moro bar is actually a Mars bar in NZ, because I didn't and was really annoyed this wasn't an actual Moro bar!

I even got to catch one last glimpse of the glaciers while flying back to North Island.

Thanks South Island. Good times.
