Waitomo Caves are the best known glowworm caves in probably the whole of New Zealand. I went there and did a 5 hour caving/climbing trip. We were climbing through Ruakuri Cave which began forming about 30 million years ago and has some of the best limestone features of all the caves in the area. We couldn't bring anything into the caves so the guides took all the photos and the cave was so humid they are a little blurry, apologies! Before they let you do this trip you have to take a fitness test which I thought was going to be like a treadmill or pull-ups or something. No, they basically ask you to crawl through a real narrow box tunnel, to see if you fit. Duh.
So these are the glow-worms I was so excited to see. Turns out they are little maggots and it's their poop that glows to attract prey… Oh lovely! They hang these threads down to catch prey, kinda like cobwebs, they looked much better in person, I swear.
We did see loads more than these few but there are no photos of them unfortunately!
Oh yes, I got to wear pink boots. Having tiny feet meant I got to wear the kids boots and of course I chose the pink ones. Who wouldn't?!
This is actually us above the underground river where another group we doing black water rafting. Most of the time we turned out out headlamps to let them go buy undisturbed, well mostly we would random do ghost impersonations just to creep them a little. oooooooohhhhhhhh…...
|My legs were not long enough for this.|
I came out of this covered in cuts and bruises but it was worth it.
